Family Vacation - 9/2012 - Indianapolis, IN

Every summer as a young child, I remember taking a camping trip to a different state every summer. I have a terrible memory, but these trips always stick out prominently in my mind. Even the trips that didn't go well are the ones we have a good laugh about today. Well, I wanted to start the same tradition for our family. We had planned on going sometime during the summer to Kentucky Lake or Lake Cumberland but time got away from us and we only had time to go in September. With it being so late in the year, we couldn't go boating so we decided to save it for a different year. I didn't want to go too far since Addison is not the best on extended car rides and she's not 100% potty trained yet. Doug mentioned Indianapolis so I started researching. It had a top-rated Children's Museum and a great zoo. This was perfect since we wanted to trip to be all about activities for Addison.

We went from Thursday night to Sunday. We got in late to the campsite on Thursday. It was an eventful trip due to construction on 70 the ENTIRE way. First mishap was when Addison was close to falling asleep for the night and I wanted to stop to put a pull-up on her. Well, I wasn't paying attention to the signs that said no re-entry to the interstate for this specific exit, which just so happened to be the one I told Doug to take. Needless to say, we had to take a windy back road detour that tacked on an extra 15 minutes or so. Then when we got there, the nav system was informing us our exit was up ahead and when it told us to take it, construction blocks made it impossible to get off - apparently we passed up the temporary exit. No big deal, just take the next exit and circle back around right? Well, the next exit wasn't for another 8 miles! Doug was steaming...but he did a good job of not having his usual 'high speed come apart'. We finally arrived at the campground about 11:30pm - waaay behind schedule.

Friday we did the Canal Walk and the Zoo. Saturday we did the Museum and had my cousin Eve and her family over to the camper for a BBQ. Sunday we just played on the playground for a bit and headed home.

Every morning Addison was an absolute terror. She wouldn't listen to a word either of us said and had a full-on tantrum about every 15 minutes. We were seriously doubting going out at all! But we did and she flipped a switch and was a perfect angel once we were out. She loved it all. I'm so glad we decided to do all age appropriate things for her because it just made it so much easier and she really enjoyed herself.

So I would say our first trip was a success and we made plenty of memories to talk about in the years to come!
The Canal Walk
The dolphin show.

They had a cool observation deck within the dolphin pool.
It was awesome!

This lion just walked back and forth in front of the glass staring at us the whole time.

Our campsite.
There weren't many campers on this side of the campground - it was so nice!

Campfire and a Capri Sun - all set!

Checking out the dinosaurs.

Daddy has something like this!

Spend a long time in the house feeding the babies.

They even had a carousel.

The ice cream shoppe.

Speed racer.

Taking a flight to Egypt!

The market.

Crazy taxi driver!

Working at the cafe.

The entrance of the museum.

The dog park - she loved watching the dogs play.

On our way to the playground.

Random Summer Pics

Finally, this is the last of the pictures I have from the summer.  I know...could I get any further behind, it's almost Christmas!

Addison loves to sit in this play stroller and talk on her phone.

Helping Mommy water flowers

She was so excited to wear her backpack to daycare.

Rocking her baby while having a drink!

I disassembled her crib to convert it to a toddler bed, only to find out that you have to buy additional parts.  So poor Addison had to sleep with her mattress on the floor for 2 nights.

She didn't mind one bit!

The first of many nights of reading books in bed together.

Now that's more like it, big bed for a big girl!

Sleepy Addison.

She always has her legs crossed, such a little lady.

Happy Birthday Daddy!

Outings

So I continue on with the chronicle of our summer.  I always have big plans and good intentions at the beginning of the summer to visit all these places, but it always goes by so fast and we never get around to all of them.  But we did do some and here are the pictures to prove it!

Addison and I went to the City Museum.  It was a HOT summer day and the air conditioning was welcomed!  This place had so many nooks and crannies to get lost in.

She of course loved the slide.

And she couldn't get enough of running up and down the ramp.

Making her way down like a pro.  No help needed by Mommy with those big steps!

She kept running away and giving me a heart attack.
Here she kept circling this post.

What's up there?

Picasso!

Picasso who doesn't like paint on her hands.

Playing with clay.

Future teacher maybe?

Checking out some performers.

Loved the spiral staircase.  It was the only distraction to the candy shop below.

The big slide that she didn't get to go on.
Maybe next time when there's 2 adults...

Not posing well for a picture.

For Doug's godson Aaron's birthday, he wanted to go to the zoo.  Ana was able to join because she was at the right place at the right time!  We did nearly everything there was to do it seems.  It was a long day, but a great day and I think everyone had a blast.  Addison did exceptionally well considering she didn't nap until late in the day.

Getting ready to see the sea lion show!

Checking out the sting rays.
I think we all were a little nervous about touching one!

I should have set the timer on this one and joined in.  There was a spot for me ;)

Not a fan of the goats, big surprise.

The butterfly house.

Always the serious face...

Taking a ride on the train.

Aaron showing his hammer head shark that he got at the gift shop.

Aaaaaand....she's out.

We went to the Freeburg Homecoming and Addison absolutely loved all the rides.  Her and Collin teamed up and tackled them all.  You should have seen those two together, they were so stinkin' cute and giddy with excitement!
Doing the big slide.

We were all a little apprehensive about putting them on the Ferris Wheel, but they did great
I think this was their favorite ride.

Just a swingin'....

The parade.
Look at that expression.  She's just getting too big!

Candy!

See Uncle Chris, I got all this candy.
Now can you open it so I don't have to eat it through the wrapper?

Carousel with Daddy!

Collin's turn down the slide.

And Addison even got Doug to go down the slide!

All 3 in the car, driving like crazy people.

This was another favorite.  Non-stop giggles.

So this excursion happened in October, but I thought I would just add it here.  Janel and I took our kids to the Magic House.  That place is so cool, they have so much stuff for Addison's age.  They loved it.

Playing the piano.

Another slide!

A favorite, the water table.

She loves to buy groceries.

The banker!

A superb waitress.

The kiddos.

Next year we'll have to hit up the places we didn't fit in this year.  It was a fun summer and I loved our little outings!
